Field of Study Requirements
Art History and Visual Culture Concentration
Students primarily engaged in historical research and written arts scholarship should declare this concentration. Following completion of Area F, media and other upper division coursework in diverse areas of art history and visual culture, the Art History and Visual Culture concentration student will complete their major requirements with a senior capstone. Seniors will begin their final year with research, development and some production of a new, scholarly work. Multiple faculty reviews and ongoing mentorship will support this research. Their final semester capstone will include high production, media relations, and presentation of this thesis under the guidance of their faculty committee. Students entering GCSU in the Fall 2023 or later semesters may declare this concentration. Students who entered GCSU prior to Fall 2023 will pursue this concentration under its previous title, Art History. These students who entered GCSU prior to Fall 2023 may declare the Art History and Visual Culture concentration only if they use the 2023-2024 or later catalog requirements to complete all degree requirements. Students should speak with their academic advisor if they are interested in making this change. Major/Concentration Requirements
Satisfactorily complete eight 4000-level classes in Art History. With department approval, ARTS 4960 Internship , ARTS 4970 Arts Practicum or other classes at the 3000-4000 level in Museum Studies, Studio Art, Art History, Graphic Design, IDST, HIST, WMST, ENGL, BLST, MUSC, and THEA may be substituted. These courses may also be used in the student’s cognate area with departmental approval. Cognate
Satisfactorily complete four 4000-level classes in Art History, including one non-western Art History course and ARTS 4930 Visual Culture: Crit Perspect . Substitutions are allowed with departmental approval. Foreign Language Requirement
Demonstrate competence in one foreign language at the level of the fourth university course (2002). Electives
Students are strongly encouraged to use their elective hours to develop a secondary or tertiary area in Fine Art Studio, Graphic Design, or Museum Studies. Senior Capstone
Satisfactorily complete the following course: Additional Degree Requirements
Satisfactorily complete all graduation requirements listed in the academic policies section of this catalog. Earn a grade of C or higher in all major, cognate, and capstone courses. Fine Art Studio Concentration
Students who want to focus their creative energies on studio work, performance and installation should declare this concentration. Following completion of Area F, investigations of various media in upper division coursework and extensive work in the Cognate Area, the Fine Art Studio concentration student will complete their major requirements with a capstone. Seniors will begin their final year with research, development and some production of a new, cohesive body of work. Multiple faculty reviews and ongoing mentorship will support this research. Their final semester Capstone will include high production, media relations, installation, exhibition, reception, and deinstallation of this thesis work under the guidance of their faculty committee. Satisfactorily complete three of the following courses: Upper Level Studio
Satisfactorily complete 24 hours from the following courses: Cognate
Satisfactorily complete four 4000-level classes in Art History, including one non-western Art History course and ARTS 4930 Visual Culture: Crit Perspect . Substitutions are allowed with departmental approval. Foreign Language Requirement
Demonstrate minimum proficiency at the level of the fourth university course (2002) in one foreign language. Electives

The Graphic Design concentration provides a learning environment that nurtures creative thinking and skill development. The curriculum is carefully assembled to fulfill the growing interest in graphic design from students in the Department of Art and beyond. Courses are designed to help students acquire the applicable skills and knowledge of digital software to gain professional proficiency in every aspect of the graphic design profession. The concentration will also prepare students for further study at the graduate level and to meet the demands of the workforce. Major/Concentration Requirements

The Museum Studies concentration is a focused study on museums and future employment opportunities within the museum field. Studies culminate in a public presentation, at a professional level, of an original creative research project produced during the senior year. Major/Concentration

Students are strongly encouraged to use their elective hours to develop a minor concentration in another field related to their career aspirations or chose a secondary area in art (Fine Art Studio, Graphic Design, Art History). It is strongly recommended that students take ARTS 2630 Graphic Design Studio I and additional Art History classes to fulfill elective hours. Senior Capstone
