MSCM 3379 Comparative Intl Media Systems

Prerequisite: MSCM 3306 with grade of C or better. This course is an introduction to media systems around the world and is designed to teach students how differing economic, political, social, and cultural systems in sovereign states produce different media structures. The course also will examine how globalization of media and new social media systems fostered by technological development are subverting, reinforcing, or otherwise changing national media systems. A case study approach will be employed. Media systems in the United States, China, Great Britain, France, Sweden, Lebanon, Ghana, and Mexico will be compared and contrasted both in historic and functional terms. Questions about ownership of media enterprises, control of media messages, and the nature of global audiences will be examined.
